When Boomer kids were judged through their aesthetic looks,
And roomers hid in schools trudged in lieu of books,
Your songs unlike others of dance and frivolous fun
Were of introspect with deep searching poetic hooks.
When that boy from Minnesota took the poets name,
When the times were a changing with Kennedy's flame,
Bet it was you who's news bestows the greatest surprise;
Ever dodging interviews, talk shows and tabloid fame.
At a time when fame required one to be bold and brave,
You placed meaning between the note and the stave,
Combing blues and folk with the literature of the bards
Prompting Nobel's smile; beguilingly old in his grave.
You unintended troubadour of youth, displacement and war,
The inadvertent laborer of your truth, embracement and lore,
On this day we; all your generation to the present and before;
Salute your capacity, longevity and tenacity forever more!
